sustainable design

Sustainable design is a philosophy that integrates green considerations into the man-made environmental development decision making process, from inception to design to completion. Building practioners now realize that our built environments and our natural environment are inextricably linked - each time we extract, process and utilize a resource, the natural environment is altered. Sustainable design is a method of design and construction that minimizes burdens on our natural resources and the environment.

Sustainable design can also be seen as part of a larger movement towards sustainablility within various industries including transportation, agriculture and forestry, among others. These all emanate from the concept of sustainable development, which is commonly defined as:

"Sustainable development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their needs."

- from Our Common Future (the Brundtland Report), The United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development 1987
